Are there really more young writers in Burley than Menston?

One of the 'young writers' trophies, being crafted by Menston wood craftsman Adam Cockerill for the Writing on the Wharfe club

One of the ‘young writers’ trophies, being crafted by Menston wood craftsman Adam Cockerill for the Writing on the Wharfe club. The top scroll will be golden, engraved with the club name. Name plaques will be added each year, the first being for 2016.

Now come on Menston, we understand that at the moment there are more entries from Burley than from Menston to become either ‘Young Writer of the Year‘ or ‘Young Poet of the Year‘. The competition to have one of two trophies similar to the above gracing two young person’s homes for a year is not, of course meant to be a competition between Menston and Burley but this is a Menston website! The competition is open to all young people between 6 and 17 years old living in postcode LS29. All you have to do is write a short story of up to maximum 1,500 words (no minimum) or a poem of maximum 30 lines (no minimum).

Closing date to receive entries is this coming Friday, 17 June. By email no later than 10.00pm, to writingonthewharfe@gmail.com. Typed entries can be left in boxes in Menston, Burley and Ilkley public libraries (where entry forms can also be found) up until noon on 17 June, when they will be collected.

For full details click YOUNG WRITERS or the Writing on the Wharfe box in the right column.

Young Writer of the Year and Young Poet of the Year will be announced, and the trophies presented, at the Menston Summer Fair on 2nd July, along with certificates for all entrants.

Come on, give the panel of judges, made up of both professional and amateur writers, something to think about!

Young writers to be named; Queen’s birthday dance; new Menstone bar ‘Grand opening’; Bleach Mill charity day; Dementia friendly Menston

There’s still time for youngsters between 6 and 17 years old to submit an entry to local writers’ club ‘Writing on the Wharfe‘ competition to find ‘Young poet of the year’ and ‘Young short story writer of the year’ as the closing date has been extended until 17th June due to the recent half term holiday. There are two super trophies, to be presented at the Menston Summer Fair on 2 July, held for a year, each of which will have a youngster’s name on, and certificates for all. For full details click YOUNG WRITERS or the Writing on the Wharfe box in the right column.

Queen’s 90th birthday celebration dance

Although it has been listed under ‘Events‘ for some time now, it’s worth a prompt as there’s still time to get tickets for the dance at the Kirklands Community Centre –  arranged as part of the Queen’s 90th birthday celebrations in the village  – 11 June. So the theme is red, white and blue! With a popular village-based band, Time Warp, and supper included in the £15 ticket, it should be a good night. There is of course a bar. Starts at 7.30pm and will go on “until late”.

For a ticket telephone 876625 or 0793 906 3120 or call in at Ribston Pippin estate agents.

New Menstone bar ‘opening’ on 19th June

If you haven’t yet visited the Menstone club in Farnley Road since the revamp (you do not have to be a member to use the facilities but you get a discount if your are) you could use the planned ‘Grand Opening‘ of the ‘new’ bar – to be known as ‘Hunters Bar’, on Friday 17th June, from 6.30pm, as a good excuse. The club always was a comfortable, friendly place to meet for a coffee or tea or something stronger but the redecoration and new furniture seems to have made it even more ‘cosy’.

No booking is necessary to go to the ‘Grand Opening’. There will be live music from 8pm and ‘posh dogs’ from Delicasolo – hot dogs with a lux difference – will be available if you’re feeling peckish. Wine and a good range of beers have always been available but a recent addition is a range of 18 different gins, just in time for summer.

If you cannot make it on the 17th then the club is open from 11.30am to 11.00pm so you can pop in any time, though there are many special events. Regulars are the monthly Fun Quiz (next one on Thursday 30 June) and the monthly Acoustic Open Mike night, loads of talented local musicians and singers, the next of these being on Sunday 19th June (you could take Dad!).

A special event later is the Menston Musicians Charity Night, to support War Child through Wharfedale Refugee Response. It’s on the evening of Saturday 9th July. More later on this site but it will be popular so get your tickets now, from Paul Davy on 874765 or Charlotte Montague on 0771 404 3650, or email pauldavy7@hotmail.com. Tickets £10, including food.

Charity Day at Bleach Mill House

Another reminder of this annual occasion, this year on 25th June, 10am until 4pm, on one of the loveliest of Menston walks, down Bleach Mill Lane to Bleach Mill House, to blow the diet with delicious cake and a tea or coffee. On this special day a Menston youngster in need of support receives all the proceeds of the day and this year it is nine years old Charlotte Wormald who has cerebral palsy. On other days through the year proceeds from refreshments, and the ‘very free range eggs’ you can pick up while there, go to support teenagers with cancer.

Making Menston more Dementia Friendly

Latest move to make Menston more dementia friendly is an event aimed at giving more Support for Carers. There is a free drop-in session on Thursday, 14th July, 2pm to 4pm, at the Kirklands Community Centre, Menston.

There will be speakers from the Alzheimers Society and Carer’s Resource and several information and activity stalls. A cream tea will be served.
